Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema has returned to the France squad, after an absence of nearly six years, as part of the team’s preparations for the Euro 2020 European Championship.
The squad includes 26 players, but the most prominent of them was the return of Benzema, who has not joined the national team of roosters since 2015, as a result of his alleged involvement in the case of an attempt to blackmail a former colleague in the French national team.
Benzema, 33, missed France’s campaign in the 2016 European Championships and World Cup 2018 as a result of these allegations.
The French prosecution concluded in January 2021, that Benzema would face trial.
He is accused of paying individuals to blackmail midfielder Matteo Valbuena, 36, by threatening to release a sex tape in 2015, but the attacker says a police officer used dishonest methods to implicate him in the case.
